Interceptor For Dogs
Interceptor for Dogs
Interceptor for dogs is a parasite prevention treatment made by Novartis. More than one parasite is killed by Interceptor; heart worm, two kinds of roundworm, hookworms and whipworms.
Novartis make Interceptor flavor tabs for dogs and also cats (although in the case of interceptor for cats, the drug only protects against heartworm, adult roundworms and adult hookworms). Heartworm for dogs can be a life threatening condition if left untreated so it is vital to choose some kind of heartworm medication to use as prevention.
Interceptor Side Effects
In trials for Interceptor, dogs reacted very well with very few cases of allergy or side effects. In the case of cats, Interceptor products used at ten times usual strength did not cause any side effects (although this is not a recommendation for you to try at home!). In the few cases of side effects, the following symptoms were reported depression/ lethargy, vomiting, ataxia, anorexia, diarrhea, convulsions, weakness and hypersalivation.
Interceptor Heartworm Preventative
Interceptor canine heartworm medication is essentially milbemycin oxime in differing doses, according to the weight of dog you are treating. The ranges are 2.3mg (coded brown for dogs 2-10 lbs), 5.75mg (coded green for dogs 11-25lbs), 11.5mg (coded yellow for dogs 26-50lbs) and 23.0 mg (coded white for dogs 51-100 lbs). The drug is packaged into tasty treats called flavor tabs.
Interceptor for dogs should be given monthly and the owner should watch carefully to ensure the entire dose has been ingested. In the unlikely case it hasn’t, the dose will need to be made up. Interceptor heartworm preventative should not be used on puppies of less than four weeks of age and less than 2lbs of body weight. Once they have reached the minimum age and weight criteria they need to be tested, and once they are in the clear, they can start treatment.
Interceptor Flavor Tabs Vs. Heartgard, Iverhart & Sentinel
Interceptor’s main competitors are Heartgard Plus, Iverhart Plus and Sentinel. All come in a flavored tab format that can be administered directly to your pet. Like Interceptor, Sentinel uses Milbemycin Oxime to kill heartworm and target other worms.
Sentinel also has added flea control with the addition of an extra compound (Lufenuron). Iverhart and Heartgard use ivermectin to tackle heartworms and pyrantel in the eradication of other worms. Enterceptor and Sentinel include whipworms in their spectrum of influence, whereas Heartgard does not, but it does control more species of hookworms than its rivals.
